School Safety Zone outside Slindon Primary School, on Reynolds Lane

Slindon Parish Council has been invited to respond as a consultee on a proposed ‘School Safety Zone’ outside Slindon C of E Primary School, on Reynolds Lane.

West Sussex County Council has a commitment to review school safety zone arrangements every 3 years and as the School Leadership Team has expressed support for the scheme there will now follow a period of consultation with the Parish Council and wider community.

Other consultees, apart from the Parish Council and the school, are our West Sussex County Councillor, Trevor Bence, and the WSCC Area Highway Manager – both of whom have expressed support – the National Trust and the South Downs National Park Authority. Arun District Council has been informed of the proposal.

A change in design would mean the removal of the one existing ‘School’ sign and the installation of two yellow backed ‘School’ signs (one in each direction) which are accompanied by flashing wig-wags. The flashing wig-wags will be programmed to run between 07:30 – 09:00 and 14:30 – 16:00 – they cannot be individually programmed with a consistent approach to timings adopted across the county.

Council members are aware of the previous consultation in 2018 and local opposition at that time and, so that it can make an informed and balanced decision, if you wish to comment on the current proposal please email Sarah – with your views and reasons, as it relates to the safety of pupils.

This matter is on next Monday’s meeting agenda when the Council will agree its response, with a current deadline for submission of 18 October.
